Olive Tree Leaves Are Turning Brown
Wait to see if the trees health improves over the next year.
Olive tree leaves are turning brown. This olive tree disease typically defoliates and kills the affected foliage. Yellow leaves on olive trees are problematic because they can be a sign that the tree is deficient in nitrogen or may have contracted a fungal infection. Leaf spot is transferred to other parts of the tree through watering but can be counteracted by pruning and the use of various pesticides. Galls up to 2 inches in diameter appear on the tree.
If the leaves are turning brown and staying on the branches your tree may be suffering from verticillium wilt which frequently results from overwatering or poor drainage. Infections usually occur during cooler spring or summer months and the pathogens are easily spread by water. There may be too little natural water falling. Olive trees are evergreens to temperatures of 12 2 degrees celsius when plants are mature so any change in foliage colour should have you investigating the matter.
Most commonly brown leaf tips or brown edges on leaves are caused by the plant not getting enough water. This disease causes leaves to turn brown. If the leaves are yellow with brown spots your tree may be infected with olive peacock spot. In rare cases it can take a tree 3 years to bounce back from transplant shock.
There are several reasons why this may happen. On a tree with leaf spot the leaves fall and the fruits develop brown lesions and often fall to the ground prematurely. Be sure to continue to water appropriately and add a mulch ring around the trees. Any infestation of pests on the olive tree can be harmful to the tree and its fruit.
This can ruin the tree s appearance temporarily but it s unlikely to kill the tree. If this is what is causing the sides of the leaf to turn brown you should supplement the rainfall with manual watering. If browning appears in summer inadequate watering or high winds may be the cause.
